Late in 2004, I took a group of eight CEOs to spend a day with twelve “lifers” in the challenging environment of Soweto High Security Prison in South Africa. We were there to experience their extraordinary leadership programme run by an organisation called Khulisa, and see what lessons we could learn. These prisoners were training to be leaders within the prison system itself, as drug counsellors and abuse counsellors. They were on the first personal development programme they had ever participated in in their lives, and the results were astonishing.
